The shop is small. That's not a warning — it's the point. Two rooms, low ceilings, shelves that go higher than is strictly sensible, and a reading nook at the back with a chair that several customers have tried to buy.

Bewick will probably be asleep on the new arrivals table. He is not a feature; he is a fixture. If he's sitting on a book you want, you're welcome to move him. He won't like it, but he'll get over it.

We don't have a café, but there's a good one two doors down. We do have gift wrapping — proper wrapping, with tissue paper and a handwritten note if you want one. We also have a small selection of literary cards and prints, because sometimes you want to give someone a book and a card that doesn't look like it came from a petrol station.

If you're not sure what you want, tell us what you've loved and what you've hated. That's more useful than a genre. We'll find you something.
